Kiln Use Policy
Kiln Use Policy (Outside Studio Use)
Important Updates
To keep the firing process smooth, trackable, and consistent for everyone, all outside kiln use now follows the KilnFire system.
Here’s what’s changed:
- Only clay purchased from Fort Wayne Clay is accepted for firing
- Non-Members may not use studio glazes or glaze in the studio unless currently enrolled in a class.
- All pieces must be submitted through KilnFire
- Firing is now priced by size: $0.07 per square inch
- No discounts for using your own glazes
When you arrive, a team member will walk you through everything—after that, the process becomes simple, easy, and convenient every time you come in.
Before You Arrive
Please come prepared so your drop-off is quick and stress-free:
- Create your KilnFire account
- Log in and save a credit card on file
- Bring your phone (you’ll need it during the process)
- Make sure all pieces are fully dry (for bisque)
- Use only Fort Wayne Clay clay bodies
Drop-Off Checklist (At the Studio)
Follow this checklist each time you bring pieces in:
- All pieces have your name or maker’s mark on the bottom
- Log into your KilnFire account on your phone
- Measure each piece (tools and instructions provided in studio)
- Photograph each piece in the system
- Submit each piece in KilnFire
- Print your ticket
- Place one ticket with each piece
- Put your piece on the correct shelf:
- Bisque (greenware)
- Glaze (already glazed pieces)
Before you leave:
- Place a box on the hallway shelf with:
- Your name
- Contact information
- A LARGE image of your maker’s mark (facing out)
- Do not leave any pieces in boxes in the kiln room — all pieces must be placed directly on the shelves
What You’ll Love About This Process
- Track your pieces anytime—no guessing where they are
- Automatic notifications when your work is ready
- A running history of your pieces, sizes, and glazes used
- Payments handled in one place—no more back-and-forth
A Few Final Notes
- Typical turnaround remains about 2 weeks
- You'll receive email or text notifications when your pieces are through the kiln. The studio will not call you.
- The studio is not responsible for damage, cracking, or glaze issues
- Improperly prepared pieces (too thick, wet, or unstable) may be delayed or refused
- Damage to kiln shelves from glaze issues will result in a $50 fee
This system keeps everything flowing smoothly—for you and for every other potter sharing the space. Once you’ve done it once, it becomes second nature.
